The Socorro Youth Advisory Board

In the summer of 2023, four Socorro youth experiencing homelessness were invited by the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness to form a Youth Advisory Board (YAB). Their task was to share their lived experience and help write a grant to bring 1.2 million dollars to end youth homelessness in the 17 counties of southern New Mexico. The Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) is an initiative through HUD designed to reduce the number of youth who experience homelessness each year. In late November of 2023, the members of the YAB learned the grant was awarded. The YAB now serves as an advisor to distributing the monies to community organizations.
OUR STORY
We helped bring a 1.2 million dollar grant to youth experiencing homelessness in New Mexico.
"Getting this grant is so important to me because I get a chance to say what I want done with this grant. I get a chance to make a change on my own. It's been something I've wanted to do since I was little. If there were safe houses for young people in southern
New Mexico, it would calm a lot of things in my head because I've been to a lot of facilities that promise a change and do not bring it."
